The fair
Open Book in Cape Town is a festival of authors, readers and debate, not a hall of publisher stands. South African trade publishing is better approached through the publishers themselves (and at Frankfurt, where many of them exhibit) than through a festival aisle. It is still one of the best places on the continent to hear what writers and editors are arguing about.
Advice for visiting authors
- Come for the conversation and the network, not to hand over a proposal at a signing table.
- South African houses such as those exhibiting in Frankfurt remain the professional route for a submission.
