The fair
BookExpo America, the old US trade show, closed in 2020. There is no direct replacement. What remains are regional festivals, the American Booksellers Association’s Winter Institute (trade, not public), and large public events such as the Miami Book Fair. Miami is bilingual, well attended, and excellent for watching the US-and-Latin American reading public. It is not a rights centre where you walk up to Random House.
Advice for visiting authors
- Do not fly to the US expecting a Frankfurt-style hall of publishers. That fair is gone.
- US Big Five acquisitions happen through agents, not aisles. A festival is for readers, booksellers and visibility.
- If you want professional US meetings, look at Winter Institute (booksellers), ALA, and specialist conferences in your genre — or meet US editors at London and Frankfurt, where they still send rights teams.
