The fair

Frankfurter Buchmesse is the centre of gravity for international publishing. Agents, scouts and editors spend the first three days in back-to-back rights meetings. The halls then open to the public from Friday. For an author, that split matters: Wednesday to Friday morning is a working floor, not a meet-and-greet. Friday to Sunday is when you can walk the aisles, see what is being launched, and — with judgement — speak to smaller presses who still have time to talk.

Advice for visiting authors

  • Do not expect Big Five editors to take an unsolicited pitch on a trade day. Their diaries are full of rights meetings.
  • Smaller independent presses, especially those without a closed meeting table, are the people who may listen.
  • Bring a one-page proposal and a printed sample chapter — never a full manuscript in a bag.
  • The Literary Agents & Scouts Centre (LitAg) is not an author drop-in. Stay out unless you have a booked meeting.
  • Use the public days to observe categories, cover design, and which territories are being sold. That intelligence is worth the ticket.
  • Guest of Honour in 2026 is Czechia; Chile takes the mantle in 2027.
