The fair

Paris’s April festival is built for readers, signings and national conversation, not for unsolicited author submissions. French publishing remains a distinct market with its own scouts and a strong translation culture. Visit to understand what French houses are putting in front of the public; do not expect to leave a manuscript with Gallimard.

Advice for visiting authors

• Use Paris to read the French market: covers, series design, and which foreign authors are being launched.
• Serious rights conversations for France still concentrate in Frankfurt and, to a lesser extent, London.
• Smaller French independents may talk; the large literary houses will not.
