The fair

BIBF is the largest book fair in Asia with a serious international rights programme. It runs at the China National Convention Center. For most visiting authors the value is observational and relational: Chinese publishing is vast, state-structured in parts, and not organised around walk-up pitches from foreign writers. Appointments, a local contact, or an agent who already works the market will take you further than a cold aisle conversation.

Advice for visiting authors

  • If you do not have a Chinese-speaking colleague or agent, treat BIBF as research, not a submission trip.
  • Children’s books, STEM and certain non-fiction categories have historically been the more active import areas — check the current lists.
  • Print a one-pager. Have a digital copy ready on your phone. Do not arrive with a suitcase of books unless a meeting asked for them.
